Plan a Family Day

If you are in the Austin area and looking for things to do with the kids, then this list is for you. Fun things, free things, historical things and more. You'll find a little bit of everything here.

Inner Space Caverns

There are many historical places to take the kids in and around Austin that won't make it feel like they are in school. They'll love being able to see and touch the history as if they were there.

Just north of Austin you'll find Inner Space Caverns in the town of Georgetown. Discovered in 1963 by the Texas Highway Department, the caverns are believed to be 90-100 million years old but were sealed off from the world around 14,000 years ago until that fateful day in 1963 when it became known to the public. They now have a petting zoo that you can take the kids by after seeing the caverns. Located at 4200 N Interstate 35 Frontage Rd, Georgetown, TX 78626.

The Capitol of Texas

Another place to visit for a little Texas history is the Capitol.

The kids will enjoy this massive structure as they walk through it looking at up the huge dome ceiling.

Guided tours are available Monday through Friday from 8:30am - 4:30pm, Saturday 9:30am - 3:30pm, and Sunday from noon until 3:30pm, though the Capital is available to visit every day of the year except most major holidays.

While in the area check out The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and their iMax Theatre.

Go on an Adventure to Find Dinosaur Tracks

Dinosaur tracks can be found in Hartman Prehistoric Garden at Zilker Park.

"In 1992, amateur paleontologists discovered dinosaurs once roamed the grounds of Zilker Botanical Garden. More than 100 tracks made by six or seven reptiles along with the bones of an ancient turtle were found. Location and accessibility made this discovery a particularly significant find." -

Head a few minutes outside of Austin, to the ever-growing Leander, and you will find more tracks to go in search of.

"About a half mile west from the Hwy 183 bridge that crosses the South Fork of the San Gabriel River lies approximately 12 dinosaur footprints embedded in the river bed. Not many people know about the dinosaur tracks just northwest of Austin in Leander, Texas. This is not a marked trail, there are no fences and no signs which makes the experience feel more magical." -

It's Always Pizza Time

You can add pizza to anything to make it a good time but with go-carts, bumper boats, laser tag, rock climbing walls, put-put golf and more arcade games than they'll ever know what to do with; there will be plenty to keep them entertained in between bites.

You'll find all this and more at Austin Park and Pizza.

Main Event boasts just as much fun and there's more than pizza on the menu. You'll also find bowling here, a huge rock climbing room, glow in the dark laser tag and put-put golf.
