Ocean Creek Resort Review

This article is offered to provide you with a review and perspective on Ocean Creek Resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Our family spent 1 week here in July 2010.

Ocean Creek Resort

Planning a family vacation to a location you have never visited can be challenging and intimidating. Unless you have friends or family who can give you a recommendation, you may be up the "creek" without a paddle (yep...pun intended). And today, when budgets are rather tight and often vacation time is slim, making sure you pick the right location for you and your family is more important than ever.

This review of Ocean Creek Resort is an attempt to give you some honest feedback and helpful advice, particularly for those unfamiliar with Myrtle Beach who are thinking about a vacation in this area.

The map below is a bird's eye view of the resort. The entrance is on the far left, units are on both sides of the road, and the beach is at the far right.

Ocean Creek Resort offers you basically 3 choices for accommodations:

  • Garden Homes
  • Villas
  • The Towers

Most of the units within these buildings are either 2 or 3 bedrooms, which is nice for a family with multiple children.

One thing, however, which you cannot really appreciate from their website is the distance of each of these from the beach. None are a far walk . . . but if you are carrying towels and toys and food, etc. then you may want to be as close as possible. Notice the map above. The closest units to the beach are the "Towers" (there are two towers). These also have their own private pools which are not shared with guests from the other units. The Towers are the most expensive accommodations at Ocean Creek.

This Ocean Creek Resort review recommends the "Lodge Units" (we stayed in a Lodge 3 Unit), which are in the middle of the map above. Lodge 1 and 2 are closer to the beach than Lodges 3 & 4. Lodge 2 has the indoor pool (which can be used by all guests in any units). Lodge 1 has the dining room for breakfast (again, this can be used by all guests. There is a charge for the breakfast buffet).

The Garden Homes are nearest the entrance to the facility, and the furthest from the beach.

Our room had a full kitchen (I think all units do), which allowed us to make meals and do grocery shopping so that we didn't have to eat out every meal. We were on the second floor, but the elevator made loading and unloading very easy. However...given the choice...a first floor unit would save some time.

Our room was very clean, and all the furnishings were in good shape. The TV had a VCR and not a DVD player, which was the only very obvious piece of outdated equipment.

One thing you may be unaware of is that all the Ocean Creek Resort units are privately owned. When you rent a unit, although the resort makes the arrangements for you, it is actually an individual owner who has allowed his/her unit to be rented for that time. Some people live here year round. Also, units are available for sale if you are interested.

In this review of Ocean Creek Resort I also want to give you my perspective on the amenities available:

Pools: Next to each of the Lodge Units, and both of the Tower units, is an outdoor pool. Also, near the beach, is a nice large pool (with a wading pool for very little children) to enjoy. All pools may be used by all guests, with the exception that the "Tower" pools are for residents of the Towers only. Also, there is an indoor pool in Lodge 2 for anyone to use. We found all the pools very comfortable, well equipped with plenty of chairs, and not overly crowded. The pool near the beach probably gets the most crowded. This pool also has a nice little "cabana" with drinks and a variety of snacks and food to buy.

Beach: The resort properties are situated along both sides of a nicely paved sidewalk which runs the length of the property, ending at the beach. We loved the beach. The waves were not too big, the sand was soft, and it was never especially crowded. This beach area is open only to guests of Ocean Creek. Bring your own chairs and, if you like, umbrellas. Otherwise they do have chairs and umbrellas set up already if you are willing to pay for them. If you plan to spend the whole day there, and don't feel like carrying your own, this may be a nice option. But I think it was like $20 or $30 for the day. There are lifeguards along the whole beach. There is an outdoor shower near the entrance to get some of the sand off you on your way back to your rooms.

Wireless: No modern review of Ocean Creek resort should fail to mention wi-fi! The whole property is covered with a free wireless internet service for your laptop or other portable internet device. I got very good reception in our room.

Golf: There were several putting greens available if you like that sort of thing.

Breakfast: They serve a breakfast buffet every morning which was great in my opinion. Lots of variety and conveniently located inside Lodge 1 (open to all guests). I think the price was around $10 per person, but we received several free passes with our reservation.

Tennis: Tennis courts were available for an additional charge.

Fitness/Game room: There was a small fitness and game room located in Lodge 1, open to all guests. I didn't use either, except to get change in the game room for doing the laundry. They both appear to be rather small.

Area Attractions

Although the beach and pools at Ocean Creek Resort may give you enough to do, and although Ocean Creek also hosts a variety of activities every day for children and adults of all ages, you may still want to find other things to do in Myrtle Beach while you visit. Here are some of the things we found nearby:

Broadway at the Beach: A very nice outdoor shopping with over 100 shops, food, rides, a huge fish pond, movie theater and seasonal fireworks.

IMAX 3D: Located at "Broadway At The Beach," this may be a fun place to cool off if it gets too hot outside for you.

Ripley's Aquarium: A great place for kids and grown ups too!

Calabash Dolphin Tours: We took the kids out on this 2 hour tour and had a great time. Not only did we see a ton of dolphins, but the crew dragged a net and pulled up some very interesting sea life for the kids to handle. This place is located about 30 minutes north of Myrtle Beach, just over the border into NC.

A Few Final Thoughts

Cost: How much does a stay at Ocean Creek Resort cost? Well, it depends on the time of year and which unit you stay in (the Towers are the most expensive). We got a good deal by checking out the specials page on their website.

Cleanliness: I think one of the nicest features of this place was the cleanliness of the grounds. The grass and gardens and ponds were kept up well. Pools and paths were not littered. There were always staff walking or riding the grounds, working on maintaining the facility with care.

Towel Exchange: Every day the crew came around and exchanged our bath towels for new ones. This was great.

Service: At one point during the week, the air conditioning in our unit stopped working. But...I made 1 phone call to the desk and within 2 hours the problem was resolved. I think that was great customer service, and should be noted.

Dining: A great thing about Myrtle Beach is that there is NO shortage of restaurants. But also, grocery stores are very close, and we were able to take advantage of the full kitchen in our unit in this way.

Reading Room/Lobby: If there was anything I didn't like about Ocean Creek, I guess it would be the fact that I couldn't find anywhere on the facility to get up early, sit (outside of our own unit), read and have a cup of coffee. Personally I enjoy rising before any of the kids are up and going down to a nice lobby, pouring a cup of coffee, and spend an hour or two reading a good book. There was not such place that I could find. As an alternative, I did find a Krispy Kreme just a few minutes down the road that opens early and has free Wi-Fi! This worked pretty well.

It's been a long time since I was there but your pictures look wonderful and it sounds like a trip there next year would be perfect.

Thanks fetty & Pamela! We did have a nice time and we would definitely go back again. I think they are a great place to stay, especially for a family with children.

I love Myrtle Beach! I didn't get to go this year, but last year we stayed at the Holiday Inn at Surfside Beach - just a few minutes south of Myrtle. My favorite restaurants are Rossi's Italian Restaurant and Godfather Pizza. I'm getting homesick thinking about it. Thanks for the reminder....and glad you're family had a good stay there.

Happy to stir up good memories! This was our first trip to Myrtle...but hopefully not our last. Blessings!

Great, detailed hub with good information. Sounds like a fun place, but given that I'm clear across the country and operating on a broken shoestring budget, it's out of the running for me.

Article sounds like it was written by either the Property Mangement company or the Rental Management company trying to promote the property. It is written way to SMOOTH.

Hi Skeptical,

I'll take that as a compliment. I assure you I live no where near, nor have any property interest in Ocean Creek. We live in New England. :)
