Katy Dog Park: 14 Acres of Fun for People and Pets in Katy, TX

I live in Houston and have worked as a nurse. I have a lifelong passion for traveling, nature, and photography (preferably all together!).

Katy Dog Park

Located in the small town of Katy, Texas, the Katy Dog Park is a delightful place in which to spend some time. The address is 5418 Franz Road, Katy, Texas 77493.

My husband and I noticed it one day when we were driving in the area due west of Houston. We decided to stop even though our four-legged canine buddy Skippy was at home at the time. We were happy that we did! People who own dogs can quickly identify with seeing other people’s dogs having fun in an environment such as this. I know that it brought smiles to our faces.

For People and Pets

Fourteen acres of well-designed land make up this Katy dog park space. We saw all kinds of dog breeds and sizes of dogs accompanying their people. Separate areas are available for different sized dogs if desired.

It is our experience that people seem to enjoy these dog parks as much as do their pets. Congenial chats happen between people that might otherwise never occur. The bond of pet ownership is something special that appears to make for easy conversations.

Walking Path

A 1,723 foot paved walking path encircles the park inside of the fenced area. People walking it three times would approximate 1 mile.

Various types of tall trees offer lots of shaded areas within the park. That is particularly nice on sunny, hot, and humid days to have the ability to rest in dappled shade.

“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace.”

— Milan Kundera

Fourteen Acres of Freedom To Run And Play

Ample wide open spaces are also there for people to toss balls or frisbees to their canine buddies or just let them run freely off-leash. It must be particularly nice for people and their canine buddies who live in apartments or who have small yards at home. Very few yards would offer the freedom to run and play, as in this beautiful space of fourteen acres.

Benches are spaced throughout the park for people to sit and watch their dogs interact with others.

Some Water Fun!

For dogs who love to swim, splash and play in the water, a beach-type scene is on site. Our very first dog, an Irish Setter, loved playing in the water. This wading pool would have delighted him!

Dog parks such as this one did not yet exist back when we had our Kelly. These canine recreational spaces are becoming more popular, and we see many more of them these days. Many of the larger ones provide pools for the dogs.

Hours, Rules, and Amenities

This inviting Katy park is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. Posted on the exterior fence are the dog park use rules. Water fountains are available for people and their pets. Dog showers are there for people to clean up their pets after a day of romping and playing. Cute fire hydrants are the source of water in those cleanup stations.

If you are looking for a verdant green dog park in the Katy, Texas area, you should like discovering and using this beautiful place. Enjoy!

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.

It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.”

Hi Mary,

Your dogs are lucky ones to be able to swim freely in the lake. For dogs who do not have land to romp, these dog parks are a great substitute. Thanks for your visit and comment.

Mary Norton from Ontario, Canada on March 29, 2021:

It's good to have this park. Dogs love to be in the cottage where they can swim in the lake. What a treat for them.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 29, 2021:

Hi Manatita,

Many people over here have helped to clear some of the shelters by adopting animals during this pandemic. Dogs are loyal creatures. Hopefully, the people realize that it is a lifetime commitment. It is not like a toy teddy bear that can be put aside and forgotten when a new toy takes its place.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 28, 2021:

Hi Linda,

This Katy dog park is indeed a lovely place for people and their pets. Thanks for your comment.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 28, 2021:

Hi Adrienne,

We never get tired of seeing dogs play either. Dog parks like this are fun places to visit.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 28, 2021:

Hi Vanita,

I am pleased that you enjoyed the photos and descriptions of this beautiful dog park in Katy, TX. Thanks for your comment.

manatita44 from london on March 28, 2021:

Yes, Peggy.

I did notice the verdant green; the lushness. It is a wonderful Park and seems very spacy too! Just right for dog-lovers, I guess.

Dog sales have gone up here in London, as is theft in relation to dogs. I guess the loneliness is intense for many and after all, dogs are devotional and loyal. Won't keep them though. Too time-consuming and again, I do not feel a need. Lovely article.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 28, 2021:

Hi Audrey,

We had fun in this dog park, even without our little Skippy. We took him to a great one nearer our home many times. Visting places like this can be good therapy! Thanks for your comment. Enjoy your day today!

Linda Crampton from British Columbia, Canada on March 27, 2021:

This sounds and looks like a lovely park for dogs and people. I’m sure my dog would love it!

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 27, 2021:

Hi John,

All of our dogs have been rescued types, and they are the best! Even purebred dogs occasionally end up in shelters at times. Best wishes in finding a new canine companion.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 27, 2021:

Hi MG,

Yes, many people in the U.S. keep dogs as pets and love them, treating them almost like children. We are guilty of doing so. It is the same with cats.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 27, 2021:

Hi Sp Greaney,

There are so many dog lovers in our country, and they are continually building more spaces like this one for people and their pets. I am sorry that you do not enjoy similar ones in Ireland.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 27, 2021:

Hi Heidi,

The pool in this Katy dog park has a circulation system builtin, so the water stays fresh. So do all the other ones that we have visited in the Houston metro area. While this one has a sandy beach portion to it, many of the other ones are made of concrete and have ridged entrances making it easy for the canines entering the pools.

Adrienne Farricelli on March 27, 2021:

Oh wow, that dog park looks really fun! I like that it's so large and that it offers many ways for dogs to play in the water. If I ever visit Texas, I really need to make sure to stop there just to watch the doggies play. I never get tired of it!

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 27, 2021:

Hi Misbah,

It is always fun getting to see people and their dogs mingling together in a beautiful space. Thanks for your visit and comment. Enjoy your day today!

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 27, 2021:

Hi FlourishAnyway,

It does sound like you have your hands full with owning 8 cats. For those with dogs, this Katy Dog Park is a fabulous place for fun and comradeship. Thanks for your comment.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 27, 2021:

Hi Brenda,

The dogs and the people all seem to get along well. Sorry to hear that the one near you is so tiny and not kept up.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 27, 2021:

Hi Louise,

We are blessed in this area and have many such dog parks from which to choose. One of them is even closer to where we live. All of the dogs always seem to have as good a time as do their people.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 27, 2021:

Hi Ann,

I am smiling over your account of rescuing your dog from the canal. You were a good dog mother! Our last dog avoided water. Skippy never wanted to go into one of those doggie pools in the dog park.

As to keeping well, we have both now had our 2nd vaccine shots. Hooray! You stay well also! Thanks for your comment.

Vanita Thakkar on March 27, 2021:

Such a nice place for dogs and dog lovers!! Engaging and clear description, beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Audrey Hunt from Idyllwild Ca. on March 26, 2021:

Wow, 14 acres is amazing. Dog heaven! I so enjoyed this excursion, Peggy. A day at this dog park would be therapeutic for sure. My little Oreo would have the time of his life, and so would I.

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on March 26, 2021:

This looks like a wonderful park, Peg. It makes me realise how much I miss our dogs. It must be time to find a new one but need to look for a rescue dog or one that needs a new home. The price of new dogs now is incredible, especially any pedigree or popular designer breeds.

MG Singh emge from Singapore on March 26, 2021:

This is an excellent article I haven't seen anything like this here in Singapore or back in India. Maybe people in America are more addicted to keeping dogs as pets while in the east it's not prevalent. I remember when I was in the UAE I hardly saw dogs at all.

Sp Greaney from Ireland on March 26, 2021:

This looks like an amazing place and it's great to see that a facility like this exists.

Unfortunately our councilors don't embrace these kind of parks so we don't have any here.

Heidi Thorne from Chicago Area on March 26, 2021:

Dog parks can be fun for everyone, if the owners are responsible pet parents. This looks like a lovely park. And the doggie pool is an awesome idea. Sometimes these parks have ponds which are kind of yucky. Thanks for sharing!

Misbah Sheikh from The World of Poets on March 26, 2021:

The park is beautiful and green. I like the walking track.

Good to see people and their beautiful pets having fun together

It covers a large area yet so well managed

Thanks for sharing this beautiful place

Blessings Always.... :)

FlourishAnyway from USA on March 26, 2021:

This type of activity makes me wish I had a dog but with 8 cats I have my hands full already. It sounds like a fun place to people and dogs.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 26, 2021:

Hi Pamela,

It was fun for us even being there without our dog. Places like this create many smiles on people's faces, and it is fun to see the fun that the dogs are having. I appreciate your comment.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on March 26, 2021:

Peggy,

This looks like an amazing dog park. The video shows an agility course too.

I can't imagine a dog park like this. I have seen Caesar Milan's on tv.

Last year our little town opened a dog park inside one of our parks.

It is pathetic.

It is so tiny...like a backyard with a fence around it with a few benches.

I don't think it's worth the trouble to visit this one.

Even the upkeep was bad...the grass had not been mowed.

I think it's wonderful that the doggies have a great place to run off the leash...I often wonder though, how they all get along.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 26, 2021:

Hi Rosina,

I am glad you enjoyed reading about this splendid dog park. Thanks for your comment.

Louise Powles from Norfolk, England on March 26, 2021:

That looks a great park for dogs. I wish there was a park like that where I live! The dogs can certainly have a lot of fun there.

Peggy Woods (author) from Houston, Texas on March 26, 2021:

Hi Bill,

I can imagine your Maggie and Toby enjoying this park in Katy! We have some even larger parks in the Houston metro area for dogs! Some of them have giant-sized pools compared to this one in Katy.

Ann Carr from SW England on March 26, 2021:

What a beautiful place. I love the quotes you've added too.

I love dogs but I don't have one at the moment. I probably won't ever have another - we're hoping to get back to going away quite a bit (some time!) and also I couldn't bear the pain of when they die (been there four times now).

Great that there is a water area - I don't know a dog that doesn't love water. Mine used to jump in the canal but they didn't realise it was a bit more difficult to get out again! I've been in up to my knees before now, hauling them out.

It's true that the human benefit is as great as the dogs'. Like-minded people in great surroundings - what more could you ask.

Thanks for sharing this - it has lifted my mood today, Peggy!

Hope you're keeping well.

Ann

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on March 26, 2021:

This is such a large park for dogs, and it looks wonderful. I love all of your pictures, as always. I like seeing some dogs off the leash and in the water just having a good time. This is a very good article, Peggy.

Rosina S Khan on March 26, 2021:

This is a splendid account of a dog park where dog owners can let their dogs play and let them interact with other dogs in a spacious green area. Lovely indeed! Thanks for sharing, Peggy.

Jack on March 26, 2021:

Do not currently have a dog but still enjoy stopping at a dog park to observe the playful activities of the active canines.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on March 26, 2021:

Gosh, our dog park is about four acres, and that seems like doggy heaven. I can't imagine 14 acres. How very cool of the city of Katy to do that!!!! Thanks for the tour. Maggie and Toby would love it there.
