City of Music

Have you or would you ever consider visiting Europe? If so, where would you go? We had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Austria a couple of years ago. We learned so much, and our eyes were filled with so many gorgeous scenes we could only imagine.

Vienna has a lot to offer. There are relics of it's rich imperial history interspersed with modern elements which creates a truly unique combination of the old and the new. It is the City of Music, earning this nickname for the great number of eminent composers that live and work there. These musical geniuses can't be blamed if they were attracted by the excellent standard of living which the city has to offer.

There are nine states that make up Austria. The greater population speak German. They have 6.8 million tourists visit yearly. So what attracts tourists to Austria?

There are modern museums and an energetic nightlife, but also quiet, secluded hideaways.

Coffee Houses

Countless coffee houses and extensive dining options all housed in the grandest architecture imaginable. This popular destination has much to offer holiday makers.

As ingrained in the culture as football is in Britain, baseball in the U.S., or barbeque in Australia, coffee houses have graced the streets of Vienna for centuries and are the perfect venue for a break in a busy schedule. Sit down, relax and enjoy a coffee, perhaps some cake, or even a slap-up meal. Each cafe has its own unique personality, so with a little exploration, you will be sure to find the one for you.

If being treated like royalty takes your fancy, why not visit Café Sacher and enjoy Sacher Torte: chocolate cake with apricot jam, said to have been favored by the late Emperor, Franz Josef. Or perhaps the dark and moody Café, Leopold Hawelka would be more to your liking, once a favored hangout of celebrity artists and writers such as Andy Warhol.

Bicycle Tours

If you are feeling energetic, there is a three-house bicycle tour, which is a great way to get a real feel for the city. Following a professional guide, you will have plenty of chances to stop and photograph some of the city's most famous landmarks, such as the Opera House, City Hall and the spectacularly grandiose Hofburg Palace: former residence of the Austrian royal family.

Museums

Designed by Fischer von Erlach, the Museumsquatier is a collection of museums, cafes, and bars, covering over 60,000 square meters. Cited as one of the city's cultural breeding grounds, it is a great place for tourists to visit exhibitions or simply relax and watch the world go by.

Danube Valley Day Trip

If the hustle and bustle of city life gets to be too much, or if you fancy a glimpse of a more rural country side of Austrian life, take a day trip to the spectacular Danube Valley renowned for its beauty. A coach will pick you up from your hotel and convey you alongside the river, past mysterious castles and imposing fortresses, while your professional guide reveals some of the secrets of the valley, famous for its vineyards, and finally to the stunning Melk Abbey, perched on a rocky outcrop.

Shopping

Visiting Vienna without making at least one shopping trip would mean missing out on a lot of what the city has to offer, even if you don't buy anything. Local specialty goods made of porcelain, leather, and wrought iron abound. On Karntner Sorasse and Maria hilfer Strasse you can find a pleasing mix time of local crafts, second-hand shops and traditional food outlets. If it is fashion you are after, head to the district of Neubau, where you can pick up the latest from international designers as well as affordable offerings from many local designers.

Stay at Least a Week in Vienna

Although we were in Vienna only a couple of days, we were able to enjoy the Baroque architecture, castles, gardens and parks. If you spend at least a week there, you can go to the Opera, go to the theatre, enjoy the vineyards and churches, and even go on a boat cruise. I hope to return to see what I missed and eat some more croissants.

Does Vienna sound like city you would like to visit? If you have already been there, please share where you went and what your experience was like.
