Living Here

Living and raising a family in Orlando has provided me with a unique opportunity to explore this amazing city for several years. We frequent the major theme parks including Sea World, Disney World, Universal Studios and Lego Land. We visit the beach often, as well as explore the countless other ways to entertain our family, friends and children.

Planning a trip to Orlando usually starts with one of the 15 theme parks. To make your vacation tailored to your family's interests you will need to learn what central Florida has to offer beyond the parks. This article will provide you with a comprehensive list of the many exciting adventures waiting for you.

Theme Parks

Disney World is undoubtedly one of the biggest tourist vacation spots here. Disney includes four major different theme parks and two water parks including Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. Each theme park takes about a one full day to complete.

Universal Studios, Sea World and Lego Land also have several theme parks and water parks to offer, making Orlando home to the greatest and most visited theme parks in the world.

Beyond Disney

Of course the theme parks have a lot to offer, but there are tons of other fun and interesting things to do in and around Orlando. Gatorland offers guest a close up view of Florida's native alligators. If you want a more natural alligator experience consider going on an air boat tour through the Everglades.

The Holy Land Experience offers guests an opportunity to walk the Bible's teachings and the story of Jesus.

Nightlife

The nightlife in Orlando is just as stimulating and entertaining as the activities during the day. Every night there are dinner theater performances, plays, and incredible shows. Consider seeing Arabian Nights Dinner Attraction or Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. While you dine on several courses, horses and theatrics entertain you and your family.

Only in Orlando would a bar made completely of ice be an attraction. The ICEBAR is the largest permanent ice bar in the world. Warm thermal coats and gloves are provided for guests to sit, eat and drink in the 27-degree ice-carved winter wonderland. When guest want to warm up they can go into the Fire Lounge.

In addition, I highly recommend seeing Cirque du Soleil, La Nouba, or The Blue Man Group.

What To Do When It Rains

During the summer months or hurricane season it is normal to have a rainstorm every afternoon because of the heat and humidity. There are many indoor attractions in Orlando keeping visitors entertained and dry. Choose from the many indoor options to be prepared. My school-aged children enjoy the trampoline arenas, indoor arcades, and bowling.

Wonder Works is a fun indoor hands on attraction to explore with your family.

Central Florida Beaches

The amazing beaches in Central Florida are no more than an hour away from most of the major theme parks and resorts. It is an easy and direct drive to the beaches. They even renamed Highway 528 The Beachline because it takes you directly to the beach. I recommend planning a day at the beach, especially if you are coming from the north in the winter months.

At Cape Canaveral you can see where they launch the space shuttles to the moon. If NASA launches a space shuttle, you can see it rocket trough the sky while playing at a nearby beach. The Kennedy Space Center is not too far from the Cocoa beach and it is a must stop for astronaut and space enthusiasts.

People come from all over the world to shop in Orlando. You can find high-end retailers at the Mall of Millenia, or find fantastic deals at the Orlando Premium outlets.

Downtown Disney and Universal City Walk combine entertainment and restaurants with shopping.

While you are at Cocoa Beach for the day, I recommend taking a trip to Ron Jon Surf Shop. There you will find beach attire, surfboards, boogie boards and souvenirs.

Natural Parks

Orlando is home to several natural state parks. A visit to one of these amazing parks can include swimming in natural springs, hiking, horseback riding, and a close-up view of Florida's wildlife—including the manatees.

At Kelly Park you can float down a natural clear spring 'lazy river.' At Blue Spring State Park you will find the manatees. The best viewing times to see the manatees are in the morning and late afternoon, December through February.

At Wekiwa Springs State Park guests can jump into the natural springs, only to be pushed back to the surface by the gentle push of the spring.

Museums

It is no surprise, with the world's creative theme parks, Orlando has a dynamic local arts scene.

The Orange County Regional History Center, is located in the heart of downtown Orlando. The museum is interactive, exploring Orlando's history from a small town citrus grove to the theme park capital of the world.

The Orlando Science Center offers fun, hands on exhibits for children of all ages. Children can work at an orange grove and build a thriving farm, become a meteorologist for the day at the Severe Weather Center, step into a chamber that simulates the wind in a hurricane and much more.

Local performing arts groups, film festivals, and museums are sure to entertain, educate, and enrich your time in Orlando.

Carly, I've lived in Longwood (slightly NE of Orlando) since 1987. My son was born and raised here. Sadly, I've not visited all Orlando has to offer. Fortunately, my son has, thanks to daycare field trips when he was little and now being a young adult with a social life. :-). I actually live 2 miles from Big Tree Park. Sadly, The Senator, which was the largest and oldest cypress tree in America, was struck by lightning a couple of years ago and is no more. The park has been refurbished and a new cypress has been planted in its place.

This article is a great reference for those who plan on vacationing here. Great job!

Hi Bravewarrior, We are neighbors. :) I live on the East side over by UCF in Avalon Park. I have not visited all Orlando has to offer, either. I told my family when I finish this Hub, we will print it out and try to cross off all 100. Interestingly, there was so much more I could put in this hub. I didn't even cover the golf courses or hot air balloon rides. It truly is an amazing city.

I did not know that about Big Tree Park, that is sad. I will change it in this Hub. I wonder if the second oldest tree in America was notified now as the oldest tree. :)

I wish this hub had been available 14 years ago. We went to Disney for an extended family trip, but the amusement park was too much for my then 1-year old son. We did find Green Meadows Petting Farm, and the world's largest indoor McDonald's PlayPlace. Since then, we try to visit at least one non-amusement park site when we visit Orlando. I look forward to visiting many of the places you listed here. Thanks.
