Is AirHelp Legit?
Even for the most prepared traveler, a delayed or cancelled flight can wreak havoc on your plans. On top of that, try getting any compensation from the airline for your trouble! Usually, it's more trouble than it's worth.
When this happened to me, the friends I was traveling with pointed me to AirHelp to take care of it. The company files the claim on your behalf and takes a portion of the compensation. Find out how to use AirHelp and whether they're legit.
Get Compensation for Delayed or Cancelled Flights
In many situations, airlines will have to pay you extra when they cancel or just delay your flight. They're not upfront about it because they don't want to pay you, but it's worth it to know your rights.
It can be such a pain to take this issue to an airline, though, which is why AirHelp does it for you.
AirHelp’s commission is about 25% in most EU cases. It can be a bit more for flights that originated outside of the EU. You can find a complete explanation of their fees in their Fee List.
How They Get Paid
How does AirHelp earn its money? Any time you use a business’s services make sure you understand how they profit. It’s a great way to filter out scams. If they make their money in a legitimate way that they’re totally clear about
AirHelp takes their smallest commission on EC 261 flights. EC 261 is legislation that requires airlines to compensate you for certain delays or cancellations within the EU or for flights leaving the EU. If your situation qualifies for this, they take 25% of the fee.
Other Flights (Including Domestic U.S.)
AirHelp has been expanding into the U.S. market and can be a good solution for issues you have on domestic flights.
No Charge If You Don't Win
You’re not charged anything if your claim doesn’t end up paying out. Essentially, you never have to pay them out of pocket.
When Can You Get Compensation for a Cancelled or Delayed Flight?
These circumstances make it more likely that you’ll be able to get money from the airline:
- Your flight is within the EU or was departing the EU.
- The flight got you there at least 3 hours late.
- You missed a connection as a result of a flight delay.
- Your luggage was lost or damaged.
- An airline strike caused your delay or cancellation.

Before You Submit a Claim
Before you submit a claim to AirHelp, here are some things to consider:
- AirHelp takes a portion of your payment (about 25%, sometimes more outside of the EU).
- It can take a while (expect 6 months to 1 year for payment).
- You must provide full documentation (ticket, payment, identification information).
Alternatives to AirHelp
You could pursue compensation from the airline on your own. But going through AirHelp will definitely be easier and it might still get you more money, even after their fees.
Since they specialize in airline claims, they already know what to do. Their paperwork is automated and they have a legal team that know how to handle things that would take you hours to research.
Contacting the airline directly is still an option. If you're already familiar with how to get paid back everything you're owed for a cancelled flight, then you're better off doing it on your own. You keep the entire amount, instead of giving a quarter to AirHelp.
But it is in the airline’s best interest to give you as little money as possible to keep you happy. So consider that Airhelp has done this a lot and it's in their best interest to get you as much money as possible. That helped me decide that it was better to hand it over to them.
