Video Gives First Glimpse of This Year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
That rapid, weird transition from October 31 to November 1 is one of the most whiplash-inducing holiday switch-ups in American culture- and it happens every year. Just like that, Halloween is over; and suddenly stores are filled with reds and greens, holiday movies are creeping back onto cable, and Mariah Carey begins thawing herself out. Thanksgiving is barely a blip on the holiday radar- Christmas is on the horizon.
Even if you think it's too early to celebrate the Yuletide, the Rockefeller Center gardeners are already planning their annual holiday masterpiece: the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. We won't have to wait long for that grand unveiling, as on November 1, the Rockefeller Center officially soft-launched this year's tree!
As announced by @nbcnews, 2023's Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has officially been picked- and they didn't have to look too far beyond New York City to find it. Roughly three hours north of Manhattan, the upstate New York town of Vestal is donating one of their community's biggest and most beautiful trees for the spectacular holiday centerpiece.
Like most other Rockefeller Christmas Trees, this towering tree is a Norway spruce, standing a staggering 80 feet tall and weighing roughly 12 tons. A special crew will soon arrive to carefully cut down the tree, transport it almost 200 miles south to the Big Apple, and begin sprucing up the spruce with decorations before its big reveal on November 29.
It's an honor to have this tree chosen for such an ostentatious occasion, but for some Vestal locals, saying goodbye is bittersweet.
"I feel terrible. I never noticed the tree," said Vestal resident Helen Perrault, expressing regret at overlooking her community's coniferous centerpiece. "I will look over at that spot and think of the tree. But it's going to a great home!"
It most certainly is going to a great home, and by the end of the month, this once-humble neighborhood tree will become a towering holiday masterpiece to be admired by folks the world over. But we've still got a whole holiday to go before that happens. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade still has to take over Manhattan before this year's Rockfeller Christmas Tree can be unveiled!
