Vacant Mansion From the 1980s Is Like Stepping Into a John Hughes Movie
Just as fashion trends change through the years, so do trends in architecture and construction and of course, home decor. If you grew up in a very '90s house like I did, you probably remember copious amounts of wallpaper, brown cabinets everywhere, and as many brass fixtures as one could cram into a single family home. And like every other decade, the '80s had its own set of trends — a time when the wood paneling was still very alive and well.
And then, there are the '80s mansions that we can remember seeing in our favorite movies from the time period, like the ones that every popular girl in any John Hughes movie ever lived in. You might think those types of homes were updated long ago, but not all of them are gone...
In a TikTok video shared by @ethanminnie on Saturday, December 2, we get a peek at one of these homes, which still sits empty today — and totally untouched from the way it looked when it was originally built in 1987, including all those glorious '80s hallmarks.
The home is located in Toronto, Canada, and it's absolutely massive. Inside, you'll find swirling spiral staircases, gleaming tile floors, and multiple huge, gaudy chandeliers throughout (and I say that in the most positive way possible). The kitchen features a newer stainless steel fridge but what looks to be the original stove — along with plenty of linoleum, of course.
Since this wouldn't be an '80s time capsule house without wood paneling, there's no surprise that there is an entire room dedicated to this trend. We're talking wood floors, wood walls, wood built ins... this mission was a very thorough one.
And then, there's the grand finale:
A hot tub in the basement, surrounded by — what else? — a wooden deck and stairs and even more wood paneled walls to match. This place is a masterpiece!
While I was unable to find the listing for this home online, the OP says it's currently on the real estate market for a whopping $5 million. That's a hefty price, but maybe the right buyer will come along?
If this house does end up being purchased, hopefully, the new owners will make sure that it stays true to the time period. It might not look as trendy on the inside as newer homes do today, but there's no denying that it's a beautiful home with plenty of nostalgia baked in.
