As safe as travel by car services like Lyft and Uber normally is, it's still so important to remain vigilant as a female solo traveler. Believe it or not, there have been instances of women running into scary situations with a driver who does not have the best intentions.
In a new video that was shared on TikTok by @sairandipity, one woman demonstrates one thing that all female riders need to check before getting into an Uber, Lyft, or cab. For women traveling alone, this is a safety hack that should not be ignored. It might even save your life one day, and it's so easy to follow.
This is such a good warning! So on the side of the car door, there is a circle with a child safety lock that you can unlock yourself before entering an Uber/Lyft or any other car service. It can never hurt to give it a glance before getting in!
However, one commenter from user @71foxyroxy noted that some cars are able to switch the child safety lock on from their end, "Yeah but newer cars like mine have the child lock switch up front by the window switches, so what are you going to do then?" The video creator replied with, "That’s what I’m finding out from these comments + I see why for the safety of a child, but in situations, clearly not good. I carry a weapon in general." It just can't hurt to check to see when you next get into a car if the child safety lock can be unlocked by using this hack.
Some people are giving their best tips on how to stay safe in car services. One commenter, @cantbetamed_ny said, "I know at least Uber has 911 assists, so since you are most likely using the app to get your ride, have it available right away. And it tracks you." Good to know! The moral of the story is to always be aware of your surroundings, and always do whatever you can to protect yourself.
