U.S. State Department Issues Stern Warning for Anyone Headed to the Bahamas

It might be best to stay home.

When planning a trip somewhere new, most of us are taking a lot of different factors into account, like what activities, restaurants, or landmarks we want to make sure to check out while in the area. But though it's not as fun to think about, safety should always remain at the top of our lists, too. And this isn't just about choosing where you stay while you're traveling — it also means taking into account what the local violence situation might be, too.

Of course, it's important to do your own research, but if you live in the United States, the U.S. State Department is the agency responsible for letting citizens know what places may be better for them to avoid, and what precautions they should be taking during their travels. And right now, one very popular tropical destination is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

As travel expert @danstravelguide pointed out in a TikTok video shared on Sunday, January 28, right now, a certain part of the Bahamas may not be the safest place to visit for many. The department has changed its advisory level for the city of Nassau — somewhere that is visited by many cruise lines and that is also home to many popular all-inclusive resorts.

Right now, the U.S. embassy is recommending that visitors "exercise increased caution" when in Nassau due to rising levels of gang violence that most often takes place in the "Over the Hill" area. According to the Department of State's website, this violence can include anything from burglaries and armed robberies to sexual assaults — incidents that no one wants to be a part of, let alone while on vacation.

They also caution against using water tour agencies in the area, since they are unregulated and can pose a host of safety risks of their own, and warn that tourists may not want to opt for a short-term vacation rental, which may not offer a level of security and privacy that will keep them safe.

Staying Safe in the Bahamas

Of course, crime happens everywhere you go, and the Bahamas are a gorgeous part of the Caribbean — there's a reason so many people enjoy traveling there year after year! But there are a few safety precautions you can take to make sure your trip goes smoothly.

The State Department advises that visitors never answer the doors of the place they're staying (even if it's a hotel) if they aren't expecting someone, and to not physically resist a robbery attempt. And as with any destination like this, you'll want to practice water safety on the beach, too, including never swimming alone.

Before you travel, it's also a good idea to register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which will ensure that you're kept up to date on any pertinent warnings and to make it easier for the embassy to locate you in an emergency.

Knowledge is power, especially when visiting a new place for the first time — whether that's a Caribbean island or anywhere else in the world. Stay safe!
