Travel Agent Explains What it Means To Feel 'Vacation Rich'
I am a firm believer that even the most budget-friendly vacations can still be just as much fun as a splurge, but if you're the kind of person who gets a little carried away once the trip has started, you're definitely not alone. While you might be the kind of person who balks at paying $50 for a single meal at a sit down restaurant back home, on vacation, that suddenly becomes chump change — and it only spirals from there. It's all in the name of having a good time, right?
One travel agent on TikTok has a name for this phenomenon: It's called being "vacation rich." And honestly, I was able to relate to her video on a spiritual level as someone who acts like she's independently wealthy every time she goes on vacation, leaving my bank account wondering who the heck I think I am.
Recently, @vacationsbybri perfectly put this feelings into words against a backdrop of a glam boat ride in the ocean, asking if everyone else knows the feeling of becoming "vacation rich."
"You're most def not rich but once the warm air and tequila hit your soul you have no financial boundaries," she wrote. "$500 sunset sail? Yes. $150 in souvenirs? Done. $20 tips for service? Absolutely."
In my own travels, I've found that this is even worse when you manage to get a good deal on your trip, because at that point, "girl math" kicks in — you saved money on the hotel, so really, this $200 activity you just booked was free. It's funny how that happens!
So many commenters knew exactly what she was talking about, with one writing, "Bro I start feeling rich as soon as I get through airport security and start drinking $24 drinks at 8 am at the airport bar." This is a great point.
It's totally possible to be bougie on a budget while traveling.
Planning in advance for these things is key, because then it gives you more time to be flexible with your dates and to look for the best possible deals. Taking advantage of huge sale days like Travel Tuesday (the Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year) can be a game changer, and so can using third-party apps like Expedia. And don't forget about taking advantage of those credit card points!
And depending on where you want to go, there are certain travel hacks you can use to cut down the cost of the trip — whether that means saving money on an Airbnb or even scoring a free hotel in Las Vegas.
If you can swing it, there's no harm in living a little once you're on vacation... just remember that you don't want the consequences of being vacation rich to hurt too badly once you're back home!
