Tesla Cybertruck Crashes Right Into Iconic ‘Beverly Hills Hotel’ Sign

Luckily, it wasn't destroyed!

The Beverly Hills Hotel is easily one of the most famous and historic hotels not just in Los Angeles, but in the entire world. Its iconic pink facade is a living time capsule to the Golden Age of Hollywood. Even the Beverly Hills Hotel's welcome sign is iconic- but that famous sign was jeopardized shortly before midnight on Sunday after a Tesla owner plowed his brand new Cybertruck right into it, prompting a police response and a whirlwind of rumors on social media.

That looked like a close call for both the sign and the driver! In the footage shared by @abcnews, the Tesla Cybertruck has its front wheels up on the sign's concrete block, but doesn't appear to have damaged the sign itself. Though the front wheels are ruined, the car's chassis is intact, and both passengers are outside, talking with the police. Wonder if they had this thing in self-driving mode...

You'd think that'd be the end of a story: an irresponsible driver nearly damaged a historical landmark, but neither the landmark nor the passengers were harmed, and all was well (save for the ruined Cybertruck). And maybe it would have been the end- were it not for X/Twitter.

Social Media Drama Over Cybertruck Crash

Initially, the driver's friend, @jackdidthatt on Twitter, tweeted at Elon Musk saying that a valet from the Beverly Hills Hotel had crashed the new Cybertruck while pulling it around. However, the community notes underneath that tweet debunked this accusation: "The driver was actually the owner of the Cybertruck, and valet was not open or operating at the time of the accident, which occurred late Sunday. (March 3, 2024)."

After a spokesperson from the hotel confirmed that their valets were not involved, @jackdidthatt came back and rescinded his earlier tweet, claiming that it was "a joke." By then, however, Elon Musk had responded to the valet rumors, tweeting "Cyberbeast [this specific Cybertruck model] is faster than a Porsche 911, but looks like a truck, so perhaps the valet wasn’t expecting so much acceleration." Scratch valet, make that the car's owner- well, ex-owner now. Hope that thing had good insurance on it...

Tesla Trouble in Los Angeles

The police told ABC 7 LA that nobody was hurt in the Beverly Hills sign crash, and no arrests were made. However, another Cybertruck crash in Los Angeles less than an hour beforehand had a far more frightening outcome.

KTLA News reported that just before 11 pm, a Cybertruck carrying two men plunged off an overpass and onto a concrete barrier on the 134 Freeway in the Griffith Park neighborhood, bursting into flames. Both men escaped the truck before it caught fire, but they both had to be hospitalized, where they were reported to be in "serious but stable" condition. The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
