San Francisco Bay Area Locals Keep Seeing ‘Creepy Objects’ Falling From the Sky
If you live anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area, or have visited in the past few weeks, you may have seen some... stuff falling from the sky. We're not talking about snow or even plain ol' rain here... the unusual objects that have been falling from the skies over San Fran are something a little bit creepier.
What are these mystery objects? Is this the result of someone's very elaborate Halloween prank, or is there a natural explanation to this phenomenon? An October 5 report from ABC 7 News Bay Area answers all of these questions and more- though said answers might still give you the creepy-crawlies.
Sorry, arachnophobes! Unfortunately, these sky strands aren't fake cobwebs from someone's Halloween home decor- they're the real thing. As reported by @abc7newsbayarea, stray spiderwebs have been floating down from the skies onto unsuspecting locals all throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
Now, encountering a few stray spiderwebs here and there isn't really all unusual when you're standing outside- hence the reporters' teasing over the public's shock. However, enough of these oddly-thick spiderwebs have fallen over San Fran recently to freak out a lot of locals. Clearly, this level of phenomena is at least somewhat unusual by most San Franciscans' standards- so what's going on?
Again, sorry arachnophobes- you're really not going to like this next part. These spiderwebs clumps are actually leftover silk balloons, which baby spiders use in a migration process called "ballooning." What exactly is ballooning, you ask? Entomologist Kirsten Pearsons shared the answer: "So what it is, is they're these little spiderlings, baby spiders. And when the conditions are right, they will release a bunch of silk and they will fly off to new locations."
That's right: it's that time of year again where baby spiders take to the skies! This happens all over the country- and all over the world- each year; but for some reason, it's surprised a lot of people in San Francisco this autumn!
If you're like me and, well, aren't exactly the biggest fan of spiders, the thought of millions of spiders flying just overhead probably makes your skin crawl. However this is a natural phenomenon, and if you're seeing any of these spidersilk balloons, that usually means they've been discarded and a baby spider isn't attached to it anymore. Plus, if you collect enough of them, you'll have some primo biodegradable cobwebs to deck out your yard with this Halloween!
