Backpacker's Funny Story of 'Perfect Day' in Thailand Is So Charming

While you should always take precautions for safety, it's often a good idea to try and hang out where the locals are when you're exploring a new place. The touristy stuff will always be there, but going off of the beaten path and meeting the locals will open you up to unique experiences you can't get from just visiting the mainstream spots.

Globetrotting backpacker @lifeofcharissae tells us an amusing story of a "perfect day" she spent in Thailand. What started with that day's agenda being thwarted turned into a day of exploration and fun!

LOL! This story was seriously so cute. Some people would have been really disappointed to have their day's plans suddenly cancelled, but Charissa and her friend made the most of their unexpected free time and went exploring in the free kayaks. Because they did that, they ended up making new friends and spent the whole day partying and singing karaoke! While Charissa will likely never see the people she met that day again, the fun memories they made together will last forever.

We love these kinds of stories. That kind of authentic experience isn't something you get if you only visit major attractions and otherwise stay in hotels. One of the great things about traveling is experiencing new cultures, and there's no better way to experience that than by hanging out with the folks who call the place home. This is why travelers should 1. be flexible when plans change and 2. not be afraid to explore off the beaten path. You never know what will happen!

"Haha love it! That's what I love about backpacking, the most unexpected random things. I ended up singing at a wedding in Vietnam," recalled @valerieveedee. "I love your stories! This is exactly why I like to travel with someone who speaks the native language. More opportunities!!" @bethw309 appreciated. "My fav thing about traveling is hanging out w locals," @yonotouching agreed.

Obviously, it should go without saying that safety comes first when meeting new people or going to new places. Keep your head on your shoulders, don't go anywhere sketchy, and listen your gut. However, despite the horror stories out there, most people are basically good. As long as you're being smart and safe, get out there and have fun exploring!
