Passenger Flying Out of LaGuardia Spots 'Possible UFO' Over NYC
While our current idea of extraterrestrial "flying saucers" may be less than 100 years old, humanity has been captivated by the idea of "unidentified flying objects" since the earliest days of our history. As long as humans have been looking skyward, there have always been those who've seen things they don't quite understand. Thousands of years down the line, UFOs still fascinate us to this day.
The only difference now, though, is that we have audio-visual technology to document potential UFO sightings. An airplane passenger flying from LaGuardia Airport believes she may have caught such a sighting on video recently, leading the internet to go wild with speculation. Here's the evidence:
According to the @nypost's article, this possible UFO footage comes from Michelle Reyes, who filmed it shortly after taking off from LaGuardia Airport on March 25. Describing the fast-moving object as a "flying cylinder," Reyes' first thoughts weren't of alien activity. She initially emailed the FAA about the incident, concerned that what she saw could be a potential "safety hazard." When the FAA didn't get back to her, though, Reyes turned to the UFO experts.
So What Was That UFO?
According to the Daily Mail, Reyes sent her footage to Enigma Labs and the National UFO Database, as well as to her father, a retired member of the US Navy. Her father speculated that the object could be a drone, but that its proximity to the passenger jet was "very surprising."
Thomas Wertman, the state director of Ohio's Mutual UFO Network, also found issues with the drone explanation, considering that the plane- and therefore the UFO- would have to be roughly 2,500 feet up at the time and "very close" to each other.
"Drones aren't supposed to fly at that altitude, at least legally," Wertman told the New York Post. "If it were something related to defense or law enforcement, you normally wouldn't see it so close to a major flight lane." For that reason, he also doubted the possibility of it being a helicopter, military plane, or other similar flying object. Still, he claims there are other possibilities, including weather balloons, that he can't rule out without the video's metadata and more information.
At this time, what the thing in the video is is anyone's guess, making it a literal unidentified flying object. Whether it's evidence of something more esoteric, though, like alien activity or military intelligence- well, we've got a long way to go before we can even hope to make that call. Still, if you happened to see something strange in the skies over New York City on March 25, there are a few UFO experts out there who might like to hear from you!
