Watch: Rescue Crews Rush To Save Kids from Dangling Cable Car in Pakistan
Tuesday, August 22nd, a remote area in the mountains of northern Pakistan. A group of children and their teacher are riding a cable car on their way to school. But this daily routine takes a terrifying turn when one of the cables snaps, leaving the riders dangling precariously 900 feet over the valley below.
What followed next was one of the most daring and innovative rescues ever, as rescue crews rushed to save the trapped passengers before it was too late. NBC News reported on this gripping story.
The situation was perilously precarious and complex. Down to one cable, the gondola was practically dangling by a thread, askew on the line amidst high winds. Immediately helicopter rescue crews were scrambled to the site, but there was a problem.
If they got too close, the heavy turbulence from the rotors could shake the cable car around, putting extra stress on the remaining line and risking it snapping. In an impressive aerial balancing act, helicopter crews were able to retrieve at least one of the students. As night fell, however, the helicopter rescue operation had to be suspended, leaving the remaining riders trapped in a perilous predicament.
That's when a collective act of impressive ingenuity changed the game. With the help of local villagers, the rescue team managed to jerry-rig a pulley system that allowed them to travel up to the dangling car without a helicopter. With everyone lending a heroic hand, the rescuers were able to ascend to the car and one by one, pull all the remaining children and their teacher back down to safety.
The victims were heavily shaken and dehydrated, and according to NBC's report, three of the boys required first aid upon rescue. However, thanks to the relentless and ingenious efforts of both the rescue teams and the victims' friends and family in their village, all would escape their horrific predicament alive.
The owner of the cable car, one Gul Zarin, has reportedly been arrested on charges of neglecting safety measures. The cable car, which is an important mode of transport between two villages in the mountains, will be out of commission for some time. At the end of the day, however, everyone is just happy to have their loved ones back safe and sound. This incredible rescue was a total triumph in every sense of the word!
