Severe Smog Leads to Another Deadly Pileup on Roadway Near New Orleans
Late last month, severe smog conditions on the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway near New Orleans led to a massive, 158-vehicle pileup that claimed the lives of seven drivers and left parts of the Causeway closed in the aftermath. Just over two weeks after this terrible mass accident occured, severe smog near New Orleans have led to another deadly pileup.
In the very early morning hours of November 7, low-visibility conditions caused a second fatal pileup near New Orleans, this time on Interstate 10 east of downtown. David Muir of ABC World News Tonight covered New Orleans' second deadly pileup in as many weeks.
The same conditions that lead to the disastrous Lake Ponchartrain Causeway pileup caused the I-10 accident yesterday morning. Wildfire smoke from nearby burning marshes and thick early-morning fog created to form something that David Muir of @abcworldnews describes as "super fog." This super fog brought visibility on the New Orleans highway down to near-zero, and soon disaster struck.
Yesterday's highway pileup wasn't quite as catastrophic as the Causeway accident in scale, but multiple vehicles were still involved, shutting down the busy interstate on both sides for six hours. Tragically, ABC News reports that one crash victim died en route to the hospital, and several others were injured.
With marsh fires still blazing through the nearby Louisiana wetlands, dangerous driving conditions from recurring fog and smoke continue to threaten the safety of New Orleans locals. ABC News reports that an ongoing drought in Louisiana has helped these lingering wildfires to continue blazing, and if they cannot be extinguished soon, this life-threatening "super fog" will likely persist as well.
