Watch: Infestation of Bugs on Flight Winds up Delaying It for 2 Hours

What a mess!

In this hectic day and age marked by constant travel chaos, it's pretty much a given that you'll encounter a flight delay at some point. At least these can usually be attributed to a normal explanation: bad weather, waiting for ATC clearance, etc. Unfortunately for one packed plane last week, however, their sudden flight delay had a far more unsettling- and itchy- cause.

A Volaris flight about to take off from Guadalajara to Mexico City had to suddenly delay their departure by a whole two hours. The reason? The plane had been invaded by a swarm of non-paying passengers... of the insect variety.

What's scarier that being stuck in a metal tube flying at 30,000 feet? Being stuck in that same tube with a swarm of hungry mosquitos! Flying with the invasive bugs was a no-go, and the flight crew immediately jumped into action.

As shown in the clip shared by @news.com.au, flight attendants dramatically marched up and down the aisles, spraying mosquito killer at full blast. Trying to breathe inside that cabin must have been a nightmare... too bad the oxygen masks stayed up!

Unfortunately, the attendants' onslaught of insect repellant had the opposite desired effect. According to Mexican news publication El Sol de Leon, the mosquitos actually become more agitated after being sprayed. This frightened passengers who feared they'd become infected with dengue fever, further adding to the chaos and anxiety inside the cabin as passengers tried to help kill the pests.

Ultimately, it would take over two hours for the flight crew to eliminate the insect threat. After delaying their initial takeoff time of 4:30 pm, the Volaris flight finally left for Mexico City around 7 pm on Friday, October 6.

From bed bugs in Paris to mosquito invasions in Guadalajara, insect pests have had a busy month in global news. I'm just about ready to make a hazmat suit an essential part of my travel wardrobe!
