Wildlife Photographer's Wild Footage of 'Monster Bear' in Alaska Is No Joke
If you haven't noticed, bears have been getting a lot of attention in the news recently- especially the famous grizzly bears at Katmai National Park in Alaska. Today kicks off this year's "Fat Bear Week," a beloved annual celebration of Katmai's biggest, beefiest, and chonkiest bears. Participants vote online in a tournament bracket to see which bear will reign supreme at the end of "Fat Bear Week."
But wildlife photographer Brad Josephs seems to have gotten started with his "Fat Bear Week" prospectives early with a discovery he made on September 30. While scoping out the salmon run in Katmai, Josephs spied a creature that he could only describe as a "monster bear"- and his footage of said bear is jaw-dropping.
OK, he was not lying- that truly is a monster bear, worthy of being introduced to the tune of Darth Vader's "Imperial March!" Even from a respectable distance away, the imposing grizzly bear was a hulking wall of fur and fangs. It looked close to 5 feet tall just standing on all fours- forget about seeing it standing on its hind legs! Despite @bradjosephs' close proximity, the enormous bear ignored the wildlife photographer and stepped on over to the water, where it started catching salmon out of the stream as easily as you or I would pick popcorn out of a bucket. Total BBE- Big Bear Energy.
Even from behind the safety and comfort of their screens, this ursine monster from Katmai National Park had online viewers shaking in their boots! "That's the most bear-looking bear I've ever seen," marveled one awestruck TikTok viewer. "That's an absolute unit of a bear," agreed @cookie_nastazio.
While this bear might not be "fat" in the tradtional sense, there's no denying that this big grizzly is a heavyweight due to its immense size alone. But will it be an online contender for Fat Bear Week? I'll tell you this much- even if this chonky champion doesn't make onto the brackets, it's already the winner in my heart.
