Frequent Traveler Reveals Hacks That Make Long Haul Flights More Manageable

It doesn't have to be a miserable experience.

Flying can be really exciting, especially when you're headed off on vacation or visiting somewhere you've never been before. But if the flight ends up being more than a few hours, it can also be really annoying (and that goes double if you're flying in economy, like I usually am). Staying in the same seat, sometimes sandwiched between strangers, can really be a drag, and once the boredom sets in, you'll be counting down the minutes until landing.

But it doesn't have to be this miserable — in fact, it can even feel a bit more like a spa day than a flight if you really want it to (no, seriously). In a TikTok video, one experienced traveler is laying out the ways she makes her long flights more manageable, and as long as you're willing to prep a little in advance, these tips really could work for anyone.

This woman, Lindsay Silberman, is on long haul flights frequently enough to know how to arrive at her destination totally refreshed and ready to take on her trip, and honestly, after getting off of almost every flight I've ever taken feeling like the human version of a dirty sock, I'm ready to take whatever travel advice she's ready to dole out.

You'll have to be willing to look a little silly, though, because she always does a sheet mask while flying. The air in planes can be really drying, and this helps combat that.

She also uses compression socks, which helps avoid swelling in your feet that can happen after sitting for such a long time, and brings electrolyte packets to mix into her water so she can stay hydrated without having to drink quite so much (avoiding getting up and down to go to the bathroom too much).

And as for the most practical advice she offered: Her "bag within a bag" flight hack. Inside her personal item bag, she keeps a smaller bag with the items she'll use most, like hand sanitizer, her sunglasses, and her wallet, so they're easy to access during her flight and she doesn't have to dig through everything else to find it all. She also recommends packing noise canceling headphones, but that's helpful no matter how long your flight might be.

These tips could definitely make flying more pleasant. Worth a shot!
