Australian Woman Learns the Hard Way Not To Leave the Door Open
We all know how infamously "wild" Australia's wildlife really is. In such a vast, sparsely populated country, the animals really have the rule of the roost, and it often seems like Aussies live on the animals' terms, not the other way around. You don't have to be way out in the bush to experience animal shenanigans, either, as Aussie animals are more than happy to bring it to the suburbs.
Aussie vet Jesk learned that lesson the hard way when she left her front door open just for a minute while she went to go take care of something. Surely nothing crazy could slip into her home in that short minute, right? LOL... this is Australia we're talking about here.
Let's be real: is there anything more stereotypically Australian than having a curious kangaroo break into your home? One minute you're out bringing in the groceries or whatever; the next, you're escorting Kangaroo Jack out of your house. I've gotta hand it to @jesk025 here, though- for someone walking up on a surprise kangaroo in her home, she handled it like a pro. She barely even seemed fazed by it!
Jesk's hilarious animal encounter went viral on TikTok, and thousands of viewers had the same takeaway I did- she seriously handled this animal home invasion like a trooper!
"Just casually gentle parenting the roo out the door," marveled @therescoffeeinthatnebula.
"'Have you made a good choice?' is now my parenting vibe," said @thewinecountrymom.
"And this is why the world thinks we have roos running through our homes," sighed fellow Aussie @halliwellgang. Well... I mean, there's at least a 'roo running through this home!
'Roo'-ling the Roost in the Australian Suburbs
Maybe it's just because I'm an American, but if you ask me to envision a kangaroo, it's usually surrounded by the Australian bush, or hopping along a stunning beach. In reality, though, things are sometimes more Rocko's Modern Life than Planet Earth, because kangaroos seem to really enjoy the suburbs (and before the Nickelodeon purists come for me, yes, I know Rocko's a wallaby).
From a survival standpoint, it does make sense. According to the New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage, kangaroos enjoy semi-urban areas for their "lawns, water sources, and shady areas." The cozy, curated environment of the suburbs isn't just appealing to humans, after all!
As cute as kangaroos, are, though, suburban Aussies know better than to treat them as pets. Though the likelihood of a kangaroo attacking a person unprovoked is rare, they can pack a serious wallop if they get aggressive, They're rough with other 'roos, too - just take this kangaroo boxing match that interrupted a suburban picnic a few months earlier.
Considering how small (possibly a juvenile) the kangaroo in Jesk's house was, he probably couldn't do much damage - but still, you never want to provoke a wild animal, no matter how small. Despite the surprise visit, Jesk kept her cool and, as others remarked, "gentle parented" that 'roo right out the door! A job well done by Jesk - and a good reminder as to why you don't leave your front door open in Australia!
