Wife Buys Husband a First Class Ticket 'Away From the Kids' and People Have Feelings

People have no chill.

There are a lot of controversial opinions and contentious topics around the subject of air travel, but few things spark off an argument faster than any discussion involving airplane seating. Doesn't matter if it's about seat-swapping, where to sit on a plane, whether or not couples should accept a free upgrade if only one of them is offered- people just have strong feelings about airplane seating.

When booking a flight for February 25, one lady decided to treat her husband by buying him a first-class seat so he could get a little relaxation time away from the kids. A nice thing to do for your spouse, right? Unfortunately, her nice video didn't get the exact response she anticipated, as people used the comments section to sound off their feelings regarding her husband's seating arrangement.

The family behind this TikTok account, @almosttripletsnyc1, is famous for blogging about raising their five-kid family in New York City. The mom had the energy to corral the kiddos for a flight, and her husband had worked through their vacation, so she decided to treat him to a first-class upgrade for the trip home. Doesn't seem like that would be a controversial decision, yet for some people, it was.

"And why weren't you included in that relaxation time?" asked @beachyy94.

"He was at work while you took care of 5 kids? That was his vacation. That should've been your seat," @krystalwibbenmeyer said.

Some of these comments went from kinda weird to unnecessarily mean. "Maybe you should've given that seat to the older son who didn't choose to have so many little siblings but helped with them while dad worked," one person commented. Jeez!

I truly don't understand the hate and faux-concern here. Believe me, I'm well aware that people vastly underestimate the amount of labor stay-at-home parents perform, and I've rolled my eyes at many a deadbeat dad on social media. I would also side-eye this video hard if the dad had given himself the one upgrade and stuck his family back in coach. That's not what's happening here, though. The first-class upgrade was clearly a freely-given gift from one hardworking parent to another, as thanks for the hard work he does, so what's the issue?

Fortunately, Mama also had plenty of defenders in the comments. "Gawd there are so many miserable people on this app! She literally said SHE MADE THE DECISION. You negative Nancys are so insufferable," @amackbrown010 hit back.

"The people leaving negative comments are clearly miserable. Go heal and find someone who loves you the way you deserve to be loved," @nykisthings chided.

Tips for Keeping Kids Entertained for a Relaxing Flight

Regardless of how you feel about this (non)debate, it's true that the parent who has to watch over the remaining five kids has their work cut out for them. Granted, judging from the video, these kids seem to be pretty well-behaved as a whole, but when you're a young child with a short attention span stuck on a long flight, it's easy to get stir-crazy pretty quick.

Some parents are content to stick an iPad in front of their kids, which can work, especially on shorter flights. With a family as big as this one, though, if there's not a tablet for every kid, that can spark a big battle over sharing technology. As an unplugged alternative, some parents make personalized travel activity kits to give their kids plenty of entertainment options for long trips!

What you put in your kids' travel kits depends a lot on their ages, their interests, your budget, etc. If you need a little inspiration, though, TheTravelHack.com has a really great comprehensive guide on how to put some cool travel kits together. Whether you're corraling one kid or five, having activity packs like these on deck is a great way to keep short attention spans transfixed for a full flight!
