Flight Attendant Gives Crucial Tutorial on How to Check for Bed Bugs

She knows her stuff!

Bed bugs have been making a lot of headlines this week, and there's a good reason for that: the infestation currently going on in France is on everyone's minds, whether they plan to be traveling there soon or not. Why? Well, if you've ever had the unfortunate experience of dealing with bed bugs yourself, you know just how difficult they can be to get rid of — and how quickly and easily they spread from place to place. It's only a matter of time before this infestation reaches other parts of the world, including the US!

That means that right now, it's even more important than ever to know how to properly check for bed bugs when you're traveling, no matter where you are in the world or where you happen to be staying. But where do you start? This TikTok video shared on Tuesday, October 3 will tell you everything you need to know.

In case you haven't heard, bed bug infestations have been reported all over Paris, France, including at Charles de Gaulle airport. And considering how connected our world is today, of course, the situation isn't going to be isolated to that one area; many are concerned that the bed bug issue is already making its way to the US.

One flight attendant on TikTok, @cici.inthesky, is sharing her tutorial on how to check for bed bugs and protect yourself (and your stuff) from them the proper way — and according to her, these are things that people should be doing every time they check into a hotel room or stay in an Airbnb.

The first tip happens as soon as you walk in. She advises leaving luggage on the hard part of the floor, not the carpet, and never putting it on the bed. Then, peel back the sheets and mattress cover and look at it with a flashlight (ideally in the dark), paying special attention to the creases and corners, and be sure to also look under the mattress too.

She also advises checking fabric headboards, chairs, and even the luggage rack. If you find bed bugs, you'll want to ask for another room.

Another tip: You can spray your luggage with lavender or use lemongrass oil, which should help repel the bed bugs, too.

Be safe out there — and don't let the bed bugs bite!
