Flight Out of JFK Forced To Turn Back After Horse Escapes Cargo Hold
Picture it- you're on an international flight, you got through the airport and boarding without any hassles, your flight wasn't delayed, you're in the air- you're in the home stretch, baby. Now all there is to do is grab a snack and tuck in for a nap- that is, until the pilot announces that they've had to turn back around because somebody's cargo... got loose?
Sounds absolutely wild, right? Well, in the case of one flight out of JFK Airport last week, things literally got wild. As reported in New York's PIX11 News on November 15, the plane was forced to turn around after a horse got loose in the cargo hold!
Yep- not a broken suitcase, or a loose item- a horse in the cargo hold had broken free of its containment and was running wild down there! According to PIX11 News, the plane was less than a half-hour into its flight from JFK Airport to Belgium when they were forced to turn back around thanks to their unexpected cargo problem. The airplane itself was fine- the flight crew just couldn't get the horse back in its stall!
On Youtube, the channel "You Can See ATC" shared a video containing audio of the conversation between the pilots of the Boeing 747 and Air Traffic Control as the incident played out. In order to return to New York City, the flight had to make a U-turn off of the coast of Boston and drop roughly 20 tons of fuel into the Atlantic Ocean to get their weight back down safely. The pilots also requested for a veterinarian to be present at JFK upon landing.
Unfortunately as details of this story are still coming out, it isn't clear yet how the horse broke loose in the first place, nor what condition the animal was in upon landing. Still, if ever there was a reminder not to "horse around" on an airplane, it's this story!
