America is a vast and diverse nation, which makes it an amazing country to go road-tripping. Each state is so distinct with unique features and traditions. And of course, if you're taking a road trip, you've gotta look up the best scenic routes to travel.
However, we found that one famously scenic route- the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, Montana, actually has kind of a creepy vibe. Check out @journeywizard's drive along it, and see if you can recognize why we got the creeps!
OK, amazing views for miles, a sunny day, happy music- what could be creepy about this video? Well, it's not the video itself, but rather the route they're driving, that gives us the chills. Did it look a bit familiar for you? If you're trying to think of where you might have seen it before, perhaps this video will clear things up:
That's right- the Going-to-the-Sun Road is the exact road used for the opening of Stanley Kubrick's horror classic The Shining. While the scenic view isn't quite as spooky without Wendy Carlos' ominous score behind it, if you've seen the film even once, it's hard to shake those haunting vibes!
Luckily, it's unlikely that anyone driving this route through Glacier National Park in real life will meet the same terrible fate as the fictional Torrance family did. Most of the people who've driven this route have fond memories of it!
"We took it from Glacier National Park to Banff then onto Alaska," reminisced @budbishop2. Sounds like the ultimate road trip! "It is so beautiful it almost feels unreal!" affirmed @poseidon719p.
Some did have frightening memories of this road, however- but for different reasons than we did. "I was just there and none of these videos show the poor driver white-knuckling the steering wheel on those switchbacks. I was unprepared," said @lemonlove175. Too true- though the winding route through the mountains might make for some one-of-a-kind views, being the one behind the wheel must be harrowing!
Still, as long as you drive carefully, Going-to-the-Sun Road will reward you with some of the best road trip views ever. That said, if you encounter any haunted hotels along the way, maybe just keep on driving.
