Frozen Canal in Amsterdam Gives New Meaning to the Term 'Winter Wonderland'

While winter doesn't officially begin for another couple of weeks, cold wintery weather has already fallen over much of the Northern hemisphere, blanketing countries in ice and snow. It's time to break out the heavy coat, scarfs, and gloves. If you live in Amsterdam, it might be a good time to get out your ice skates, too.

Every once in a while, some of Amsterdam's many canals freeze over in the winter, and the locals take to the ice on skates! Dutch photographer Etem, aka @ieuyar, captures one such dreamy scene in this TikTok video.

Now this is what we think of when we imagine a winter wonderland. What we wouldn't give to skate over the serene canal in the middle of one of Europe's most iconic cities. This is the ideal way to celebrate the chilly winter weather!

"My grandma used to sled on those canals in Holland when she was a little kid before she moved to the US," shared @izdavidson. "Imagine ice skating to work," said @thelastprayerbender. That would be amazing- although your ankles would probably get sore! "My beautiful daughter lives along there. Miss her heaps, but a wonderful Christmas she will have," @gloriajohnson083 mused wistfully. The holidays are a bittersweet time for families who live far apart, so sometimes, the best we can do is to wish for a lovely holiday season to our families far away.

However, as lovely as this, it's not exactly a common sight. "Unfortunately our Amsterdam canals are rarely completely frozen. So if you like to visit Amsterdam to skate the canals, make to sure to check first!" advised @loudandqueer. If the canals aren't frozen when you go, though, don't worry. Amsterdam still has plenty of ice skating rinks and other areas where you can get your ice skating fix. Just don't forget to bundle up and stretch those ankles before you get out on the ice!
