Little-Known Secret Behind Frontier Airlines’ Carry-On Bag Policies Has People Outraged

People are not happy!

Like many other budget airlines, Frontier Airlines allows customers to bring on one free personal item, but charges for carry-ons beyond that. The policy is a nuisance for some, but budget travelers have generally found a way to make it work in their favor.

However, a recent internal change in corporate practice regarding baggage has been brought to light, prompting many enraged flyers to "cancel" the company online. Popular TikTok commentator @noahglenncarter goes into the issue that's got everyone so heated.

Wow... I've seen a lot of scummy corporate policies in my day, but this one really skeeved me out. The moment the company started to financially incentivize this practice for gate agents, they had to know that there would be plenty of agents willing to stretch the definition of what "fits" to make a commission. And these commission rumors aren't baseless either, as a Frontier agent confirmed to The Independent back in March that they do make bonuses off of charging customers for "oversized" bags- though they didn't confirm exactly how big the bonuses are.

If the still images from the example video that Noah showed weren't enough to convince you, I've linked the full video here. Clearly, the bag fits with room to spare, but the gate agents insists it does not. It's not just this one unfortunate family, either, as many others in the comments claimed to have gone through this same experience.

"Went through this is October, we will never fly Frontier again," said @sara_cotti. "Happened to me. Crazy part was I flew back home with THE EXACT SAME BAG and was not charged on the return flight. I fought the charge and it's such BS," shared @monicaacosta8621.

Scenarios like these are exactly why I often argue that "budget" airlines aren't as budget-friendly as they claim to be. If you can arbitrarily be charged a $99 fee at the airport because the gate agent is desperate to make a commission, in my opinion, you're better off paying more up front with a mainstream airline and enjoying their relative stability. With budget airlines like Frontier pushing the definitions of what counts as "oversized" baggage to the limit and saddling customers with huge last-minute fees, I would seriously consider how much money you'll actually save before buying a ticket.
