Florida Teen Describes Scary Account of Fending Off a Shark

It attacked her off the east coast of the state.

With summer right around the corner, many of us are starting to make travel plans, and Florida is always a popular pick. Between the theme parks, the warm weather, and the many beaches to choose from, it makes sense that people would flock to this southern state to take some time off to relax and have fun. But in the midst of all that fun, if you're heading to the beach, you should always stay vigilant!

If you don't spend much time in the ocean (or even if you do) it can be easy to forget about all of the danger that lurks there, and we're not just talking about the potential of drowning — though that's something that you should obviously try to avoid, too! After seeing this TikTok video from @nbcnews, we're reminded of just how important it is to take all safety precautions against shark attacks, too.

A 13-year-old girl named Ella Reed is talking to NBC News about how she bravely fended off a shark attack, and though she was able to survive the scary incident, she didn't walk away unscathed.

"Right as it bit me in the stomach, I shoved my arm where it was biting me so it didn't get my stomach and it got my arm instead, and then I hit it with my other hand," she said. And just when she thought she was in the clear, the shark came back and attacked her again.

The outlet reported that Reed sustained injuries that left her using crutches, including bites to her torso, arm, finger, and knee, and as soon as the attack was over, she told her friend to run so that she would stay safe.

She was in so much shock that she even went home to see her parents before asking for help, and though she did need to go to the hospital, she's now recovering — and she's even returned to Fort Pierce Inlet State Park, where it happened, since she doesn't want to be afraid of visiting what she says is her favorite place.

"Yeah, I’m gonna keep on coming back, after the stitches come out," she said.

It's so good to hear that Reed is safe and getting better. Remember to watch out for sharks while swimming this summer — not everyone is as lucky as she is after an attack.
