Mom Shares Important Essentials for Getting a Toddler To Sleep on a Flight

It's no easy task.

If you've traveled with young children before, you already know that getting them to nap (or even sleep for the night) on the go doesn't always work as well as you'd hope it would. After all, the excitement of flying on a plane can make it hard for them to settle down, especially if they aren't keen on sleeping at home in their own bed to begin with — and if they have as much FOMO as my daughter tends to have. But everyone in the family will have more fun on vacation if the kid is rested, so it feels like the stakes are pretty high in the moment!

There are ways to make the plane a more favorable sleep environment for babies and toddlers, though, and one mom has taken to TikTok to share what works for her family. It may involve a bit of shopping (and packing a few extras in your carry on bag) but boy, will it ever be worth it.

In a video, mom @kaleighgawn listed her essentials for making sure that her toddler sleeps on an overnight flight. The big one is a little extra, but if you're headed out on a long haul international flight and need to make sure your child has slept all night when you get there, it will be totally worth it: An inflatable toddler bed.

The bed will extend your child's plane seat so that they are able to stretch out and lay down comfortably, rather than attempting to sleep scrunched up in their plane seat or in your lap. There are a lot of different options for these online, including this one from Amazon, and according to the OP's comments, this is something that a lot of parents use on planes so flight attendants won't be surprised by it, though the downside is that you would have to wake up your child if there was turbulence and you needed to be sure they were buckled in.

She also brought her daughter a blanket and a pillow to keep her comfy, and held a blanket in place over the seat using the tray table so that it would be darker and she'd be able to sleep undisturbed.

This is genius and could be a major game changer for traveling with little ones. If they kiddo ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!
