Woman Sues Disney for $50k After Getting an 'Injurious Wedgie' at Water Park

It's a lot more serious than it sounds.

As a frequent Walt Disney World visitor, I can attest that it feels like nothing bad can reach you when you're inside that Disney bubble... but no matter how magical the theme parks feel, bad things can (and do) still happen. And now, one woman is making headlines after one truly terrible injury derailed her vacation, leaving lasting impacts on her quality of life.

This week, multiple outlets are reporting that a woman is suing Disney for what is referred to as an "injurious wedgie" she got at one of their waterparks, and though many people are tempted to poke fun at the situation, after hearing her account of what happened, it's actually very serious.

A report from local ABC news affiliate WESH 2 News was shared on TikTok by @disney_news_girl on Monday, October 2, bringing light to what sounds like a pretty horrifying situation. The woman was spending time at the Typhoon Lagoon water park at Disney World and going down a slide called Humunga Cowabunga, which is a five story vertical drop.

The 30-year-old woman, Emma McGuiness, claims she has suffered "severe and permanent bodily injury," mentioning that at one point, she went airborne and landed hard back onto the slide. In the lawsuit, she says she experienced "immediate and severe pain internally, and, as she stood up, blood began rushing from between her legs."

McGuiness is now suing Disney for $50k in damages, and according to what water safety expert Thomas J. Griffiths told The Washington Post, while injuries like this are uncommon when it comes to water slides, they are possible.

"When you’re plunging at a high rate of speed into the water, anything can go wrong," he said.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how this all plays out, and to see if the Disney parks decide to make any changes to keep this from happening again. If you're planning to visit a water park in the near future, you might want to consider avoiding these types of slides, especially if you aren't able to use a tube while riding them.
