Watch: Leaping Deer Jumps Onto Bicyclist in South Carolina
In the South, mid-autumn hits that perfect balance of cool, but not too cold, making it an excellent time of year to get outside and breathe in some of that fresh air. Why not take advantage of that great weather and soak it all up on a long bike ride?
Unfortunately for one South Carolinian bicyclist, though, he'd end up sharing the road with more than just his fellow riders. While on a group ride, this unfortunate bicyclist experienced a high-speed collision with some local wildlife!
It all happens so fast that it takes a slow-motion rewatch to really understand what happened here. According to the New York Post, who uploaded the clip to YouTube, bicyclist Edwin Gonzalez Montoya was on a Peloton ride through Travelers Rest, South Carolina, when a deer leapt out of the woods right in front of him!
As seen on Montoya's GoPro video, the deer got some serious air. However, it wasn't quite enough to fully clear the bike rider, and its legs clipped Montoya as it flew over head. Somehow, though, Montoya managed to stay upright and not lose control of his bike, to the surprise of his fellow riders!
According to additional information included in the New York Post's video description, Montoya couldn't believe that he came out of the high-speed creature collision unharmed. He claimed that he "kept moving his arms to make sure they were OK," worried that the sheer adrenaline rush might be numbing the pain of a broken limb- thankfully, it wasn't.
This close call could have been a whole lot worse. "I was in the typical aerodynamic position so the only thing I did since I was moving forward was to lean back, and the deer hit my arms," Montoya reportedly said. "I think it could have hit my head but because I rapidly moved back it only hit my arms."
Why do deer always seem to cross the road at the worst time? We're just glad that Montoya- and the deer- weren't harmed!
