Stomach-Churning Cruise Ship View Shows the Reality of Crossing the Drake Passage
Experiencing motion sickness on a cruise vacation is obviously less than ideal, but there are certain ways to avoid it. Not only are there prescription medications that can help (like that little patch that goes behind your ear that saved my last cruise), along with over-the-counter remedies like Dramamine, but there are also natural methods for preventing and relieving those nauseous feelings at sea, too. There's just one problem: What happens when the cruise gets so rough that even those with the strongest stomachs start to feel it?
That had to have been true for the passengers on the cruise in this video that's currently making the rounds on TikTok. With these kinds of waves, it would be hard to keep down your breakfast... let alone enjoy the time you're spending on the ship.
In this video shared by @palapainparadise on Tuesday, November 21, we can see what it's like to cross the Drake Passage while cruising through Antarctica. And though cruises like this often come with beautiful, icy views, this part is pretty rough even if you don't happen to be prone to seasickness.
Just looking outside the window, it's easy to see that the waves are huge, and we can actually see the boat moving with them. Yikes!
"During breakfast, we started to experience 30-foot swells. Shortly after, the ship went into lockdown," the OP wrote in the video. "All portals were sealed, common places were closed down, and we were restricted to our rooms."
They went on to experience hurricane-force winds and 50-foot swells, and the OP said that it took about 30 hours before they felt like eating again. That sounds brutal.
It may not always be this bad, though; in a comment, this passenger noted that the seas were rougher than usual because of a storm. But if you're planning to take a cruise where you'll cross this area, you may want to come stocked up with plenty of motion sickness remedies just in case you need them.
I hope everybody on this ship managed to enjoy the rest of the trip!
