'Most Controversial' Cabin at Sea Comes with a Truly Odd Feature
There's plenty of ways you can mess up a cruise just by choosing the wrong type of cabin. You could trigger your claustrophobia with an interior cabin, or keep yourself awake by booking a room over the engines... or you can be a introvert and pick this stateroom.
On a recent voyage, cruise vlogger @emmacruises set to sea on board the MS Iona with the British cruiseline P&O cruises. Instead of choosing a normal room, though, she spent her trip inside what's been called the 'Most Controversial Cabin at Sea" due to one bizarre feature.
One look and it's easy to see why this cabin is so controversial. Calling this a "balcony" when the balcony is juuuust barely distinct from the deck is quite a claim! You can also see into other cabins from the deck, as well as guests looking down into yours, so good luck getting any privacy. Between all the eyes on you and the promenade being just a few feet away from the balcony, this room has got to be an introvert's worst nightmare!
But the question remains: is the controversial room really so bad? Despite the objectively weird design and lack of privacy, Emma still saw some upsides. While the balcony being built right over the deck is a odd choice, Emma admits that it makes for the perfect people-watching spot!
However, despite Emma's attempts to see both sides, the fact remains that this cruise cabin type is an extremely controversial one. "This has to be the worst design ever, my friends hated it and kept curtains and door closed all cruise," expressed one TikTok user. A travel agent, @andreenawatts, spoke up as well: "I work at a cruise travel agency and we have so many complaints about these cabins!"
Personally speaking, while I think this unique "balcony" room has a lot of fun potential, I think any potential novelty of the experience would fade away far before the cruise was over. The fact that guests have to stay in these rooms for days, even weeks, at a time, gets rid of a lot of the appeal. On the other hand, though, it does have an ocean view, which is more than you can say for interior cabins!
What do you think? Do you have a soft spot for the "Most Controversial Cabin at Sea," or do you prefer to stay high, dry, and away from prying eyes?
