Traveler Tries 'Cheapest Abroad Flight Roulette’ Challenge and Ends up Somewhere Sweet

She spent under $100 USD on all three flights.

Have you ever just wanted to head to the airport and impulse-buy the cheapest ticket you can find to a faraway destination? Sometimes the thought of an impromptu adventure is appealing, but the question stands: just how far can you go on the cheapest route possible?

Travel vlogger Sabrina, aka @girlvsglobe, decided to find out by playing a sort of "flight roulette" where she picked the cheapest international flight three times in a row. Starting from London's Gatwick Airport, here's where she ended up.

Well, I'd say that adventure experiment was a resounding expense! Her only rule was that she couldn't repeat countries, which kept things interesting. She started with a £12 (~$15) flight from London to Dublin, Ireland. After a couple nights in Dublin, she hopped over to the European mainland with a €20 ($21.62) flight to Marseilles. Finally, she capped off her game of flight roulette with one final £16 (~$20) flight to beautiful Majorca

Ireland, France, and Spain... not a bad itinerary! And when we say she kept it cheap, we mean really cheap. After converting to USD, she only spent about $56 and change on all three international flights. What a steal!

Now, I was impressed, but I also acknowledged that she got pretty lucky with her launching place, so to speak. London has short flights to the European mainland and North Africa, and there's far more international destinations within a short jaunt than the average US airport. So what would happen if one tried her flight roulette, using the same rules, from the US?

I chose Denver International Airport as my starting point, as it's a popular international hub that's also close to the center of the continental US. I also added one more rule- as all her flights seemed to be one-way and non-stop, mine needed to be, too. I started from next Monday to give myself the best rates. I found a $130 flight to Cancun- already much more pricey than Sabrina's quest, but OK. Allowing myself two days in Cancun, the next destination was Guatemala City for $95. Another two days of visiting factored in, and the last flight of my imaginary journey brought me to the coast of San Salvador for only $59.

All told, this imagined flight path would have cost me $289 before fees- more expensive than Sabrina's trip, but cheaper than a lot of round-trip economy tickets between domestic airports. Of course, your starting airport can affect destinations and rates, too. Maybe I'll get up the gumption to try "flight roulette" myself someday...
