If you're a lover of the morbid and the macabre- and you can handle being confronted with the grim reminder of your own mortality- you'd likely love a walk through one of Europe's several historic catacombs. The most well-known location is, of course, the Paris Catacombs. However, catacombs are prevalent throughout many parts of Europe, and one location- the Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo, Italy- is especially intriguing.
TikTok influencer @rae_spirits loves delving into spooks and scares from all around the world. Her video about the Capuchin Catacombs is intriguing but eerie!
Think that Egypt had the world's most (well-preserved) mummies? Guess again. The Capuchin Catacombs are chock full of literally thousands of them! The Paris Catacombs may be full of skeletons... but how many mummies do they have? Exactly.
It's well worth the visit, according to many of the people who have been there themselves. "I've been. it's incredible, very macabre, and has a solemn beauty to it," shared @work.lift.repeat. "Hihi, my birthday gift from my hubby was a trip to Palermo to see the catacombs. One of the best things I've seen," @nanorigmeyvalian recalled.
"Visited this place - it was fascinating and there were people of all ages mummified…. Sicily is a beautiful country with its historical culture," reminisced @pinkfleur22. "I've been there and I honestly preffered it over a normal old cemetary. While a bit morbid. A little girl that was mummified got me teary eyed," @chroniclesofzina shared. That sounds so sad... and yet, we want to hear her story, and in a way are happy that she has been remembered long after her death.
Somber, spooky, and supremely fascinating, the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo are a sight to behold. We hope to visit them ourselves someday.
