Bear Spotted 'Snorkeling' in Alaska Is a Sight to Behold
One of the best parts about traveling is seeing the local wildlife who you might not get to witness out in nature back home. Where I live, I'll see birds, squirrels, and maybe the occasional rabbit in my yard, but not much else, so anytime I'm visiting somewhere that has more exciting creatures roaming around, I'm all in.
But one traveler ended up with a pretty spectacular animal sighting that they shared on TikTok on Sunday, October 1, and it's going to be hard to top this one, especially if you don't get to see bears very often (though, depending on who you ask, that might be a good thing for some).
Traveler @renee.roaming shared a video of a brown bear in the water, trying to find salmon — hey, a bear's gotta eat! As she wrote in her caption, this footage was filmed at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park in southern Alaska — a state known for incredible wildlife sightings like this one.
As it turns out, the bear is actually using snorkeling techniques to catch the salmon. According to the National Parks Service, bears frequently go snorkeling when fishing in the summer and the fall, looking for any fish who might be just beneath the water. They may also sit or stand and wait to see a fish swim by and then pounce, and some will even chase their prey, though that can be less common because it doesn't always work.
The parks service also adds that brown bears are easy to spot at Brooks Falls, so if you're hoping to see one, that's the place to go — the salmon here are plentiful, so there's not much incentive for them to go elsewhere.
Hopefully this guy was successful on his fishing trip.
