Adorable Bear Family Filmed Going For a Pool Day in SoCal

Looks like summer's starting early!

We're right in that sweet spot where it's not officially summertime yet, but it's starting to feel like it. With another sweltering summer looming on the horizon, it's high time we got a jump start on the pool parties and beach days and embraced the seasonal vibes a little early.

It isn't just humans that are feeling up to a late spring pool party, though. A homeowner in Monrovia, California, got the shock of his life on May 9 when he caught a bear family having a pool day in his backyard!

This adorable bear family must have taken the bear-shaped floatie as a sign! ABC 7 LA shared the video of the mama bear taking a dip in the backyard swimming pool while her cute cubs looked on. The cubs didn't seem as keen on swimming as their mom, but eventually managed to entertain themselves by climbing on a tree.

The homeowner, Ricky Martinez, could only look on at the spectacle through his windows while the bear family stared back- both of them seeming content to leave each other alone. Fortunately,  this wasn't Martinez's first brush with bears!

Black Bears in Monrovia

Monrovia is located on the outskirts of LA County, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Here, native wildlife and humans live in close proximity, and it's not uncommon for a mountain lion or bear to occasionally wander into town. As a Monrovia resident, Ricky Martinez is fond of spotting the occasional wild visitor- from a safe distance, of course.

"We tend to get lots of wildlife crossing through here," Martinez told NBC LA. "We are always left in awe when we see the bears, especially a momma bear with cubs. We haven't seen cubs that little before, and it was the cutest thing ever."

Of course, Martinez is still careful about minimizing potential wildlife encounters near his home. He assured The Guardian that he and his partner take bear safety precautions, such as not leaving trash outside and disposing of garbage away from the home. But while he doesn't actively encourage bear visits, he enjoys them for what they are.

“This is their land,” Martinez told the Guardian. “They are used to coming through here. We have healthy boundaries with them. If they’re outside we stay inside. We let them do their thing, we admire them. They are welcome here – they can come take a dip whenever.”
