Michelle Terhune
After spending 30 years in the marketing, advertising and communications field, I chose to “semi-retire” a few years ago and took a job with a small law firm, managing personal injury plaintiff’s files. I had been in leadership positions since I was 25 years old, and I was ready to work 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, and leave work at the office when I wasn’t there. That hasn’t exactly panned out for me. The adjective “workaholic” has been used by many to describe me.
I’ve spent my career working at times for an employer – a liberal arts and sciences university, a direct marketing agency, a healthcare system – and at times running my own agency with a broad client base, most of which were nonprofit organizations. My experience with a wide variety of employers/clients and my ability to write, edit, proof, press check, direct creative, generate content, create websites, conduct market research and analyze data, facilitate and lead strategic planning efforts, raise money and members, elect candidates, pass ballot issues, and develop and execute comprehensive marketing and communications plans make me a good researcher, a quick study, an intuitive thinker and a lover of learning.
Now, it’s time for me to write about it – all of it or none of it, but whatever I want to write about at any time. My blog is going to reflect the miscellany I’ve picked up during my life, along with my love for writing, reading, travel, food and wine, flea markets and antiques, converting trash to treasure, and being my own handyperson with my very own power tools.
I hope you’ll join me for the journey. And if you ever have an idea for something I should be writing about, do tell.
In addition to this blog, I’m currently working on a historical fiction novel based upon my adventurous Irish great-great grandfather, a collection of essays based upon my late mom’s descent into Alzheimer’s, and a nonfiction novel about my starting, then ending a life living abroad. I also spend time pitching stories and story ideas to various digital, online and good old-fashioned print publications, as well as seeking out a few clients thirsty for content. So much to write, so little time.
There’s that saying about doing what you love and make a living at it. You know the one. I would much rather spend 12 hours a day writing, re-writing and re-re-writing than in an office. So, here goes. I welcome you on my journey.
